CHOUP, n.2 and v. [tʃʌup]

I. n.  A “cheep,” a single word (Abd.2, Abd.9 1940). Cf. Cheep, n., 1., E.D.D. has chowp, to chatter (Chs.).Abd.1 1929:
Sic a backward bairn! I didna get a choup oot o' her for a' ma speirin'.

Phr. never to lat choup, to remain silent, keep mum (Abd. 1956).

II. v. To cheep, chirrup, gen. of a duller less shrill sound than cheep (Abd. 1975).
