DAUNT, n. Found only in pl. = discouraging words. Known to Lnk.3 1940. Obs. in literary Eng. (in sing. use) since 17th cent. (N.E.D.), but still found in Som. and Dev. dial. = a check (E.D.D.).Lth. 1813 G. Bruce Poems 184:
