PHIL, n. A variant spelling of fill. The total amount of thread on the pirn or bobbin of a spinning-wheel, which is then twined along with the thread from other pirns to make the yarn. The explanation in the quot. is due to a misapprehension.Sh. 1898 Shetland News (2 July):
The rim of the wheel being turned in the direction contrary to that by which the strands — which are variously called “phils” or cords — are spun.
