PRO-RECTOR, n. In the University of St Andrews: the title used until 1858 by the vice-Rector. See Rector.Sc. 1858 Min. Univ. St. Andrews MS. XVII. 415:
The Senatus appoint the ex-Rector to act in the meantime as pro-Rector and Promotor.
Sc. 1908 J. M. Anderson in N.E.D.:
[At St. Andrews] down to the date of the Ordinances following on the Universities Act of 1858 there was always a pro-Rector, or, as he was sometimes called, a vice-Rector, whose duty it was to act for the Rector in his absence.
Fif. 1926 P. R. S. Lang Duncan Dewar 148:
The term Pro-Rector is used by the St. Andrews University Commissioners of 1840, and the term Vice-Rector is used in the Minutes of Senatus.
