[O.Sc. quart = Eng. gallon, c.1630, gen. used for wine, ale or oil. The quart was not a regular measure in Sc. and the equation with the Imperial gallon is appar. to be explained on the assumption of 1 Sc. pint = 4 Eng. pints for which see under Pint.]
