ST JOHNSTO(U)N. A soubriquet for Perth (Sc. 1701 Hist. MSS. Comm. (Laing MSS.) II. 4, 1795 Stat. Acc.1 XVIII. 496, “it was never so called in any of the public writs, nor by the inhabitants in general”, 1816 Scott O. Mortality x., 1870 R. Chambers Pop. Rhymes 257).
