ELPHINSTONE. Zool. After Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779–1859), of Cumbernauld, Indian administrator. Used in form elphinstonei, -ii, as a specif. name of various Indian birds and animals, Sciurus, squirrel, Anguilla, eel, and Columba, pigeon, by W. H. Sykes.
