BOD, BODE, n.3 In proverbial saying (see quots.) in regard to some effort in which one has failed in the first attempt. [bɔd, bod]Sc. 1825 Jam.2:
“I'll begin,” or “I'll set about it, new bod, new shod.”
n.Sc. 1898 E.D.D.:
He left off drinkan, but he's at it again, new shot, new bode.

[The saying is found in O.Sc. (1535), see D.O.S.T. Bod may be either for Bode, n., an offer, or a reduced form of Boden, prepared.]
