†ZAD, n. One of the names of the letter Z (see Z, letter), used attrib. in quot. to indicate some kind of espalier method of growing fruit-trees, resembling a Z.Sc. 1814 J. Sinclair Agric. Scot. II. 136:
A plan of training, called in Scotland the zad method, has long been employed in some places, it is a modification of the fan-training.
