Acolyt, n. Also: accolyte, -lit. [ME. acolyt, acolite, etc. (14th c.), med.L. acolitus, acolythus.] An assistant to the priest or deacon. —c1420 Wynt. v. 2483 (crownebenet fyrst, accolyte neyst; W. accolit, C. and colet). 1588 King Cat. 109 (nixt ane exorcist, efter ane acolyt).
