Mony, a. Also: -ye, -ie, , -ey(e, -ei, monny, -ie. Compar. monyare, -er. Superl. monyast, -est, moniast, -est, moneast, -ist, monest. [North., west midl. and south-western ME. moni, mony, OE. maniᵹ, mǫniᵹ, with vowel as in ony (? and also donk and lone); in the mod. dial. Sc. and north. Eng.: cf. Many.]It seems likely that the first element of the surname Monypenny either was, or was treated as, this word: examples in the forms Monipen(n)ie, Moni-, Monypeny, etc., occur f. the 13th c. (Black Surnames s.v. Monypenny, p. 609, also c 1350 Liber Dryburgh 232 [Monypenny] and 1364 Rot. Sc. 886/1 [Monupeny]).
