Styl(e, Stil(e, Still, n. Also: styil(l, styll(e, stille, steille. [ME and e.m.E. stile, still (both in Cursor M.), style (Lydgate), steele (1585), OF estile, stile, style (14th c. in Larousse), L. stilus.]
1. The manner of wording of a legal document, chiefly with reference to the usual, traditional or acceptable form; a particular wording, esp. of an obligation (Obligatio(u)n n. 2 b). Also common, ordiner, etc. style. Also attrib. with men, persons whose function was to draw up documents. See also Style-buke n.(a) 1398 MacRae Early Sc. Texts No. 5.
