Haly, adj. Also: halé, hali(e, haley, hally, hallye, hallie, haily, haillé, hail(l)ie, haelé, hely, helly, hellie. [Northern ME. haly, hali, midl. and southern holy, etc., OE. háliᵹ.] Holy, in usual senses as applied to persons, things, places, or abstract concepts.Early examples in place-names are Haliwelburn (a 1230), Halistane (1329), Halywell (1398).For use in various special collocations, in addition to haly blude, haly croce, etc., given below, see also the articles on evangel, fader, graif (grave), sacrament, tre, trinité, vangell.(1) a1400 Leg.
