Pertin-, Pertenence, -ens, n. Also: pertyn-, pertan-; partin-, parten- and -ense, -ance, -ans; -ench, -anche. [Late ME. and e.m.E. pertinence (a 1450), -enance (1525), -ynens (1552), OF. partenance, -inance, pertinence, f. partenant, Pertinent n. and a. Cf. also Purtenaunce n.]Because of the close resemblance between scribal c and t, there is possible formal ambiguity between pertinence and certain forms of Pertinent n., esp. in the plural.
