Also fig. ‘The serjeant or officer of Dunkeld … took in the dues of money and kind, handed over a considerable sum to the bishop, received allowance for the usual arrears and remissions, made payments to the steward on occasion, settled debts of a miscellaneous character, and delivered live stock which was required for the kitchen.' Robert Kerr Hannay Rentale Dunkeldense: being Accounts of the Bishopric, 1505–17 (SHS) ix. ‘The serjeant or macer was another important functionary, still remembered in Glasgow in the Serjeant’s Fauld on the Easter Common. He carried a red wand of three quarters of a yard in length, similar to that carried by the King's serjeant. The duty of the serjeant was to summon the parties to compear in the court and to carry its sentences into execution. ... The King’s serjeant also carried a horn for denouncing rebels. The red wand he used for relaxing those who returned to the King's peace.'
