ASSEMBLY, n. Name frequently used in Scotland to indicate the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. See General II. 1. Comb. Assembly School, a school set up by the General Assembly in a parish where the heritors' provision for education was inadequate, chiefly in the first half of the 19th c. in Highland areas. Hist. Sc. 1910 J. Kerr Sc. Education 193:
It was by no means unusual, where from any cause the parish schoolmaster was unsatisfactory, to find the General Assembly or Free Church Sessional School surpassing the parish school in both numbers and efficiency.Arg. 1845 Stat. Acc.2 VII. 70:
