COOKSTOOL, n. Erron. used by Ramsay = a pillory. The form cook(e)-stool, = cucking-stool, is found in Eng. 15th–17th cent. (N.E.D.).Sc. 1728 Ramsay Fables, Twa Cut-purses (1800) II. 533:
The tane . . . Unbidden clam the high cookstool, And put his head and baith his hands Through holes where the ill-doer stands.

[The 1728 ed. gives cockstool.]
