LEILL, n. Also leal. A single stitch such as is made in sewing a sampler (Kcd. 1825 Jam.). Combs. double-leill, a single stitch gone over again to give it strength (Ib.); leal-steek, sampler stitch (see quot.).Sc. 1827 C. I. Johnstone Eliz. de Bruce III. viii.:
A very learned argument had been warmly maintained on the relative excellence of double-cross stitch, cushion-stitch, and leal-steek … on every pillow-case and towel in the Manse.

[Prob. short for leal steek, in which case the first element may be an extended use of Leal, I. 1. or 5., sc. secure, firm, trustworthy. Another conjecture, that it represents Lille, the textile town in Northern France, is not substantiated by any other evidence.]
