†LEILL, n. Also leal. A single stitch such as is made in sewing a sampler (Kcd. 1825 Jam.). Combs. double-leill, a single stitch gone over again to give it strength (Ib.); leal-steek, sampler stitch (see quot.).Sc. 1827 C. I. Johnstone Eliz. de Bruce III. viii.:
A very learned argument had been warmly maintained on the relative excellence of double-cross stitch, cushion-stitch, and leal-steek … on every pillow-case and towel in the Manse.
