BERWICK COCKLE, n.comb. A kind of sweet of the toffee sort (see quot.).Bwk. 1958 Scotsman (19 April):
Still in the Borders, but farther south, you will find “Berwick Cockles” which have been made there for nearly 200 years. It was originally a home-made sweet, but became so popular that it was produced commercially. The name of the sweet is derived from the fact that it slightly resembles a cockle.
