EVANGELICAL UNION, n.comb. A religious body which broke away from the United Secession Church in 1843 under the lead of the Rev. James Morison, and hence also called Morisonians, q.v. The church was Congregational in organisation, held very modified Calvinist doctrines, esp. on atonement, and was united with the Scottish Congregational Church in 1896. The name was frequently abbreviated to E.U.Sc. 1843 F. Ferguson Hist. Evang. Union (1876) 262:
We, the undersigned Christian Brethren, . . . have agreed to form ourselves into an association under the designation of the ‘Evangelical Union’. Ags. 1894 F. Mackenzie Glenbruar xiv.:
