DOUGLASIA. Bot. 1. Also in form Duglassia, (1) a genus of verbena (1871 W. Houston Reliquiae 13), also called Volkameria; (2) a genus of tropical S. American laurel (1774 J. C. Schreber Plantarum Genera 1761), now called Ajovea. [Both after James Douglas (1675–1742), of Scotland, doctor and botanist in London.]
2. A genus of primula from the mountains of North America (1836 J. Lindley in Bot. Reg. XXII. 1886). Also in form douglasii, specif. name of several genera of trees and flowers, esp. Pinus douglasii, the Douglas fir or Oregon pine of Western America, the world's tallest tree.
3. Zool. In form douglasii, specif. name of various birds and mammals, e.g. Ortyx, quail, Lepus, rabbit, Sciurus, squirrel, Tringa, a knot, Scolopax, snipe, Arctomys, marmot, all of N. America.
