LAWSON. Bot. 1. Deriv. Lawsonia, the plant henna, called by Linnaeus after Isaac Lawson (†1747), of Scotland, friend and publisher of Linnaeus (Systema Naturae, first edition 1735). 2. Deriv. lawsonianus, specif. name of Chamaecyparis lawsonianus, an American cedar introduced by Peter Lawson (1794–1873), of Edinburgh, nurseryman there in 1854 (1865 Parlatore in Ann. Mus. Fisica e Storia Nat. Firenze I. 3).
3. Deriv. lawsoniana, specif. name of a cypress, Cupressus lawsoniana, after Sir Charles Lawson (1794–1873), of Edinburgh, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, botanist and arboriculturalist.
