ROSS. Zool. After Sir John Ross (1777–1856) and his nephew Sir James Clark Ross (1800–62), of Stranraer, explorers of Baffin Land and the North-West Passage and in Antarctica. Derivs. Rossia, a genus of rosy-breasted N. American gull (1838 C. L. Bonaparte List Birds 62), also of a cephalopod or squid (1835 R. Owen in Ross Second Voyage xcii.); rossii, specif. name of various animals, birds, fishes and crustacea found in the Arctic and Antarctic on the Rosses' expeditions.
