†WHEEGIL, n. A piece of wood used on the harvest field for pushing in the ends of the straw bands with which a sheaf is bound (Lth. 1825 Jam.). Comb. wheegil pin, id. [ʍigl]Slk. 1930:
I was shown a wheegil-pin shaped like a spurtle — bent at the end and fish-tailed. Inscribed on it with a knife is ‘Yarrow 1851'.
