Grete, Greit, a., n., and adv. Also: gret, greite, greitt, greyt. [ME. greet(e, grete (also greyt), earlier greate, græt, OE. gréat.The long vowel of the compar. gretar, -er, in place of the more original grettar, -er (see Gret a.) has been taken over from the positive and the superlative.Other forms in which the adj. appears are great, Grait(t, Grat, Grate, Grit (also Girt), grite s.v. Gryt(e.]
