Mans(e, n. Also: manss(e, mance, manis(s, -ys. [Med. L. mansus dwelling, house, also, a quantity of land considered sufficient to support a family, f. L. mans- p.p. stem of manēre to dwell, remain; also e.m.E. mance (1534).]
1. a. A dwelling, residence, esp. a large or stately one, a mansion. b. The principal residence of an estate with its immediately attached outbuildings and land. c. Comb. in mans(e) (dwelling) place.(Cf. Maner n.2, Maner place n.).Also, the site of, or for, a mansion. In a few instances there is ambiguity with Mainis n.a., b. 1490 Acta Conc. I. 149/1.
