[ME and e.m.E. trety (1297), trete (c1325), treat (1436), trayt (Caxton), OF tretier, traitier, L. tractāre.]

1. a. intr. To hold discussions or negotiations (with another) about (anent, for, of, upon) some matter requiring to be settled. b. tr. To discuss or negotiate (such a matter); to arrange or settle (a matter) by discussion.a. pres. 1375 Barb. xix 129.
