LEGIBLE, adj. Aphaeretic form of Eng. eligible in its sense of suitable, desirable; hence by extension, fair, equitable. Nonce usage, phs. due to confusion with such words as legitimate, etc.Bnff. 1866 Gregor D. Bnff. 105:
