HUTTONIAN, adj., n. In reference to the theories of James Hutton (1726–97), of Edinburgh, founder of modern geology, enunciated in a paper to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1785, in which he propounded the igneous origin of rocks (1802 Edb. Review I. 202–6).
