I. n. A stone-throwing battle, a fight with stones.Ags. c.1820 J. M. Beatts Reminisc. Dundonian (Ser.1. 1882) 18:
A fight or “trap”, i.e. the boys inhabiting one district of the town throwing stones at one another till a victory was secured by making the enemy take to their heels.

Pitched battles in stone-throwing or “trapping”, as the practice was then termed.
