Letter, -ir, n. Also: leter, -ir, let(t)yr, let(t)re, later, lit(t)er. [ME. (a 1225) and e.m.E. let(t)re, let(t)ere, letter, F. lettre, (L. littera a letter of the alphabet, pl. litteræ an epistle, written documents, letters).]The forms lettre, lettres, -ez are chiefly (but not invariably: see e.g. 1412 Facs.
