Sanct, Saint, Sainct, Sein(c)t, adj. and n. Also: sanctt, sancte, sant(e, santt, scant(e, (sanc); sain(c)te, sayn(c)t(e, seynt(e, sent, sayn. Abbrevs. S., St., St., Sct., (Stt.). [ME and e.m.E. seint (c1175), sainte, sein (c1200), sente (c1230), san, sant, sent, sande (all Cursor M.), sonte (a1310), saint (Ayenb.), sen (1389), sain, S. (a1400), syn (a1470), synt (15th c.), sainct (Tindale), sayn (1538), St. (1638), L. sanctus (cf. also OE sanct, MDu. sanct, sant(e, etc.), OF saint, (c1050 in Larousse), earlier san(c)z (late 10th c. in Larousse).Since c and t are indistinguishable in many MSS, the editorial readings of some examples, particularly of santt and sanc, must be doubtful. The form sant is, however, confirmed several times in rhyme. The form sayn, like the corresp. ME forms, occurs prefixed to a name beginning with a consonant.]
