Perfit(e, -fyt(e, a. (n.) and adv. Also: -fitt, -fytt, -fijt, -fyit(e, perifit. [ME. and e.m.E. perfite (c 1330), perfit (Wyclif), -fitt (1559), -fiȝt (14–15th c.), compar. perfiter (Rolle), superl. perfitest (1628), f. as Parfit(e a., with change of initial syllable to per- after L. perfect-us (see, however, the entry Par-, Per-). Cf. Perfet a., Perfect a.As the verse rhythm indicates, the stress varied freely between the first and the second syllable, as also in ME., e.m.E. and the mod. Sc. dialect.]
