An emblematic or heraldic device, impressed in wax, etc., also the (piece of) wax so impressed, adhering or attached to a document as an attestation of authenticity or as a guarantee of reliability, loyalty, etc.; also a seal viewed as the possession of an individual, comprising the matrix (see sense 2) and the wax impression made regarded as a single entity.This seems to be the usual way of understanding the word, the sense division 1, 2 being, therefore, blurred and in a real sense artificial.
